De todos es conocida la ínfluencia de la música de los 60 en la vida de Tom Petty sobre todo de los grupos de la invasión británica y de los de la Costa Oeste Américana. La música garaje de los 60, el blues y el country han tenido también un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de su carrera. Ahora bien y aunque pudiera resultar extraño la SURF MUSIC también tiene su protagonismo en su carrera o en la de su grupo que no ha sido suficienttemente reconocido. De dicha influencia va esta pequeña historia realizada en respuesta a la convocatoria que para este dis se ha organizado por el gran blog TP IN SPAIN con el fin de que nuestras plegarias se hagan realidad y podamos disfrutar de la presencia de TOM PETTY en nuestro país.
PETTY es un fan declarado de los BEACH BOYS ( el conjunto más reconocido de Surf Music aunque su pertenencía al estilo sea discutida). Siempre se mostró muy influenciado por la armonías vocales del grupo de Brian Wilson pese a reconocer su incapacidad para poder ejecutarlas a la altura.
Tal y como se recoje en el libreto de la caja o box set FLASHBACK canciones de su repertorio como ANYTHING THAT´S ROCK AND ROLL (1 lp), YOU CAN STILL CHANGE YOUR MIND (Hard Promises), o YER SO BAD (Full Moon Fever) no habrían nacido de no ser por los BB.
YOU CAN STILL CHANGE YOUR MIND, una de las joyas ocultas de Tom Petty, es un Tributo poco disimulado a Brian Wilson por la cortesía de Mike Campbell con las voces de Sharon Ceilani y Stevie Nicks como invitadas.
La reverencial consideración sobre Brian Wilson que mantiene Petty se ha declarado en múltiples ocasiones en varios de los videos dedicados a los Beach Boys como I just wasn´t made for this time ; es más en la reedición de los discos de los BB hace unos 10 años Petty escribió unas letras sobre uno de sus discos favoritos HOLLAND.
"1973’s Holland is not only a wonderful listening experience, it’s a great case for The Beach Boys being more than Brian Wilson’s backing singers.
Much of this disc was initially recorded in Holland. However, resident genius and leader Brian Wilson did not make the trip. Brian was struggling with his much documented emotional and mental problems at the time, leaving the rest of the boys to share the composing and production chores that had almost always been Brian’s forte within the group. Happily for us they more than rose to the occasion and indeed Brian himself came through with two great songs, the first being the album opener, and now something of a classic number, Sail On, Sailor. With Bruce Johnston’s defection The Beach Boys added two South African musicians, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar, on guitar and drums respectively, into their permanent lineup.
It is Blondie takin’ the lead vocal here on Sail On, Sailor. Dennis Wilson offers two compositions to this LP. The whimsical Steamboat and the romantic Only With You both produced by Dennis with brother Carl.
It is fun to admire the different vocal timbre of The Beach Boys as they each sing lead throughout Holland. Al Jardine and Mike Love are both familiar sounds as they sing their composition California Saga. The group’s voices are all similar and distinctive at the same time making the lush harmonies, when they join together, all the more wondrous.
Not enough can be said about the greatness of Carl Wilson’s talent, never more obvious than in this LP. Carl co-produces every track here, and his vocal on his song The Trader is, well, something of a miracle. The Trader may be the best piece of work ever by a man who did many, many great vocals. The Trader is the centerpiece to Holland and all these years later still leaves me with my mouth hung open when I hear it.
The sequence of tunes is beautiful. The playing shows The Beach Boys to be one of the U.S.’ strongest rock bands at this time. I saw this line-up in concert several times and the shows seemed not only contemporary, but perhaps a little ahead of us all.
Brian’s second offering Funky Pretty, again with Blondie singing lead, ends the album leaving the listener in a great place. When issued on vinyl way back when, the LP included an extra 7” disc called Mt. Vernon and Fairway – A Fairy Tale, which is just that, a fairy story with narration, written and composed by Brian Wilson. It is included in this CD package. Certainly nothing to do with Holland. One wonders why it was included with the original album. Listening to it, for me, is a little bit hard. At best I would call it “weird.”
But then these are the people and personalities who made that wonderful thing that was more than the sum of its parts, The Beach Boys.

Pero para desgracia de Petty no ha podido tener mucha participación con el mundo Beach Boys salvo la colaboración de Carl Wilson haciendo coros en dos canciones , una perteneciente a la BSO SHE´S THE ONE llamada HUNG UP AND OVERDUE y la otra en el disco WILDFLOWERS en el tema HONEY BEE
HUNG UP AND OVERDUE es otra de las canciones con mayor influencia a Brian Wilson.
Si dejamos a un lado el mundo Beach Boys y nos zambullimos en el mundo de la surf music más clásica el primer lugar dónde debemos recaer es una oscura cara b del single CHANGE OF HEART en 1983 ( que se encuentra en el cd The Other Sides de la box set Flashback) titulada HEARTBREAKERS BEACH PARTY
HEARTBREAKERS BEACH PARTY llegó a ser el titulod e un documental del director Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous)
Ahora bien el mayor logro en este estilo es el disco perdido de los Heartbreakers o mejor dicho de MIKE CAMPBELL/RON BLAIR que bajo el nombre THE BLUE STINGRAYS sacaron en 1997 en Lp de instrumentales surf denominado SURF N BURN.
15 Temas excelentes componen el álbum. Disco muy alabado por los seguidores de este estilo de música hasta tal punto de ser considerado como una de las cimas del renacimiento del estilo.
GOLDFINGER , el tema de la película de James Bond es de lo más celebrado del disco y el único incorporado al repertorio de Tom Petty como refleja la caja de directos LIVE ANTHOLOGY
Como puede comprobarse por la portada y contraportada del disco se trata de todo un homenaje a la surf music hasta tal punto que en su interior se decía que los Blue Stingrays eran los inventores del instrumental surf así como de la existencia de otros tres discos del grupo, lo cual obviamente era todo un montaje /broma con el fin de ocultar a los verdaderos interpretes.
MOON OVER CATALINA y STINGRAY STOMP son otros dos buenos ejemplos de surf de calidad además de disfrutar de Mike en pleno apogeo de la guitarra.
Es hora de recoger las tablas pues el sol se esta poniendo, hasta otro día COWABUNGA!
Excelente, me quito el sombrero, y con tu permiso me quedo con este post para Tom Petty In Spain, con demostraciones de amor como esta Tom Petty está cada dñia más cerca de nosotros. Sobretodo aquí hay mucho de lo que aprender y muy buena música por escuchar. Saludos
